The upgrading works of St. Lucia Pier aim to increase the operation area and deepening of the seabed. To this end, a geotechnical study has been carried out by Sering. The study involved the analysis of the results of the site and laboratory investigation; the geotechnical characterization of soils and rocks; the re-design of the longitudinal section along the entire structure and the cross-sections with highlighting soil-structure interaction; and geotechnical verifications for dimensioning the structure. A geological investigation campaign was also carried out at sea and on land, for geotechnical reconnaissance and characterization of soils affected by the works envisaged for the upgrading and lengthening of St. Lucia Pier.

In a first phase, the installation of 12 reinforced concrete cellular caissons was envisaged. The selected type of the intervention responded to the need to confine, within these caissons, the dredged materials, which have a high concentration of pollutants.

Subsequently to meet the needs of the client to minimize interference during the execution phase. in order it was decided to change the type of construction, providing quays, both in the head (north side) and on the west side with precast beams and cast in place slab.
