Following the September 2003 and 2012 storms, Malta Government developed  the National Flood Relief Project to avoid increase in risks to life and property and control damages caused by flash floods in 4 main catchments basins of Malta: Birkirkara-Msida, Gzira, Marsa and Marsascala, preventing damages up to a 1 to 5 years return period and developing infrastructures that are suited to future maintenance, inside a wider valley management concept.

Works consist in the build of a drainage tunnel network of about 11 km to convey flood from the cities of Birkirkara and others in  Malta to the sea. The work was excavated principally with a Road Header Sandvik MT 520  which has a production of 30 m/day. The main cross section is  about 6 m wide and 5 m high. The excavated soil is 95% rock  globigerina, a limestone typical in Malta Island. The lining of the  excavated surfaces is shotcrete and some trunks in the tunnel are  reinforced with steel ribs. The last part of the tunnel, for about 1  km is under the sea level.

Sering developed the construction design  consisting of:

  • Carrying out site investigations and laboratory tests;
  • Critical elaboration of the experimental data with on-site investigations and laboratory tests, to examine the physical-mechanical properties of foundation soils and rocks;
  • Geotechnical and geo-mechanical characterization of soils and rocks
  • Research, geotechnical and structural terms, the best solutions for the tunnel
  • Structural and geotechnical design of the tunnels
  • Technical assistance to the Contractor during construction
